Jim Abernathy Tribute: www.scuba-adventures.com

Muriel and Jim
Four years ago, it was my great privilege and pleasure to spend a week aboard The Shearwater off the Grand Bahamas Banks (sailing from his base of operation in West Palm Beach, Florida) with the inimitable Jim Abernathy. The purpose of the trip was to scour a 100 square mile area to spend time underwater with dolphins, sharks, turtles, giant halibuts and anyone else joining us in a swim by. Jim is the Steve Irwin of the sea. He loves, not likes, not appreciates, but LOVES tiger sharks, and he has figured out how to discern which ones are available to be related to, safely and miraculously. On shark week, Jim is a regular as he is shown doing such things as playing with “Pattycakes”, one of his good friend tiger sharks. On the face of it, he could appear reckless as some judged Steve Irwin as being, but nothing is further from the truth. Jim knows what he is doing and is extremely responsible in his briefings before anyone leaves his craft. There is a world of difference between being foolhardy and being attuned. Jim is attuned. Life is about risk and caution in combination. Jim is a master, in my opinion.
By offering the tours to the deep that he offers, he is contributing a huge amount to help people fall in love with the ocean and want to protect and preserve it. Being with Jim and his enormous love of all things under the sea made for one of the best weeks of my life. Not to mention which, Jim is a crackerjack photographer as you can see on his website. I’m just grateful I got to be on the receiving end of Jim sharing what he loves beyond all else in life, befriending sea creatures and helping people fall in appreciation with them in a whole new way.
